Finding Beauty in Weeds v.5
Nov 1st, 2008 | "Finding Beauty in Weeds v.5"
Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is very common here in Florida. It is an epiphyte, meaning it grows upon another, though it is not a parasite. It is not a 'moss' either, It is actually an 'air plant' that absorbs nutrients from the air or rain. It is in the same family (Bromeliaceae) as Bromeliads and pineapples. It has been used in the past as stuffing for mattresses and other furniture. Despite what some believe, the Spanish moss in the trees do not contain Redbugs aka 'chiggers', they only hide in the moss after it has touched the ground.
